FHS Throwers Compete at State

Ryan King, in his final season of athletic competition at FHS, made his last go-round a memorable one. Wrangler Guilliams, who qualified for State in the Shot Put and Discus last season, kept up with his success in his primary events.

King had top finishes in the Shot Put throughout the season, included 3rd Place finishes at the San Tan Foothills Meet on 3/9/22 and our Home Meet on 4/20/22. It wasn't until the Safford Rotary Invitation towards the end of the season that King secured his spot at State, beating his previous PR by more that 4 feet with his 5th Place finish (44' 8.75").

Guilliams, who had Top 5 finishes throughout the season in both the Shot and Discus, punched his ticket to State early in the season. In our first competition of the season at the VCHS Non-Qualifier, Guilliams started things off right by setting his new PR in both the Shot (44' 10") and Discus (125' 2"). He finished 2nd in both events. Just over a week after that at the Bulldog Invitational, Guilliams' 3rd Place finish in the Shot (44' 8") met the provisional standard for State. At our next invitational, Guilliams secured his spot at State in the Shot, setting his new PR and finishing 2nd Overall with is 45' 0" mark. Guilliams doubled-up on that feat by meeting the provisional standard in the Discus that same day, setting a new PR and finishing 2nd overall with his 125' 2" throw. As the season came to a close, Guilliams met the automatic qualifying standard in the Discus, setting his new PR yet again and a 3rd Place finish with his 135' 5"mark at the Safford Rotary Invitational.

On 5/10/22, Day 1 of the 2022 AIA Div III Track & Field State Championships, King and Guilliams were all set to compete in the Shot Put. Both had difficulties as King scratched on each of his attempts and Guilliams finished the day with his best throw being 39' 4.25", finishing 23rd of 26.

On 5/14/22, Day 2 of State, Guilliams took to the Discus ring. With a best mark for the day of 115' 8", Guilliams did not make it past the prelims and finished 17th of 34.

Both King and Guilliams had successful 2022 seasons, and although King is set to graduate in a few days and move on to the world of collegiate athletics, FHS T&F is looking forward to further accomplishments from Guilliams as he enters his Senior Year in 2022-2023.
